Description
This is Hodgkins only surviving print.
This is number 17 in the second series of Contemporary Lithographs which consists of 25 different lithographs by various artists.
Apart from a short period working as a textile designer for the Calico Printing Association in Manchester, Hodgkins earned her living as a painter. She developed from a minor provincial painter in New Zealand to a leading British one, continuously experimenting, not finding her personal style until her 60 s. She described it as liberating still life from its domestic setting . Griffits described Hodgkins Contemporary Lithograph as characterised by crisp floating shapes held in tension with patches and sweeps of clear colour: a brilliant cadmium yellow singing out next to a primary red contributes to a particularly light, buoyant image. Piper, who was a good friend of Hodgkins, and helped her with this project, thought that her lithograph made the others look tame and school-girlish . Published by Contemporary Lithographs Ltd, London.
